A Step-by-Step guide on how to Encrypt Facebook Messages<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Facebook rolled out its \u201cSecret\u201d messages feature back in July. At that point it was still in almost a beta form, but now it\u2019s fully fleshed out, which means you can begin encrypting your messages. Here\u2019s how:<\/p>\n

Step 1: Open Facebook Messenger to the home screen.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Facebook is going to give you a brief explanation of \u201cSecret Conversations.<\/p>\n

Step 2: Select \u201cCompose Message\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n

This one is self-explanatory\u2014it\u2019s going to send you to the screen where you can start writing a message to someone.<\/p>\n

Step 3: Select \u201cSecret\u201d in the top right corner<\/strong><\/p>\n

Secret messages are more secure, and disable features like geolocation. Don\u2019t worry, you\u2019ll still be able to add pictures and emojis.<\/p>\n

Step 4: Select the Person You\u2019d Like to Have an Encrypted Conversation With<\/strong>
\nIf you\u2019re about to discuss sensitive information, like state secrets or the location of the Lindbergh baby, you should do so over encrypted channels.<\/p>\n

Secret messages \u2013 can we all agree that\u2019s a really silly name for them? \u2013 won\u2019t appear on any device except for the default one. So select the device you\u2019re currently using (we suggest your phone) as the default for sending and receiving your super-secret communiques.<\/p>\n

Congratulations! Now any message you send from this device will be end-to-end encrypted! Which means only the recipient and sender can read these messages. Facebook says it doesn\u2019t read your messages, and maybe you even believe that\u2014but now Facebook couldn\u2019t read them even if they wanted to. Your messages also can\u2019t be subpoenaed by law enforcement.
\nBut, if you\u2019re still worried about your message security, there is one last option to make your super-secret encrypted messages even more secure!<\/p>\n

Bonus Step: Set Messages to Self-Destruct!<\/strong><\/p>\n

That\u2019s right, if you\u2019re really security-conscious, there\u2019s a setting that will cause your messages to delete themselves a set period of time after they\u2019re read.<\/p>\n

To access this option, choose \u201cset timer\u201d and select a timeframe between 5 seconds and 24 hours for the messages to self-destruct in.<\/p>\n
