The following instructions will guide you through the SSL installation process on Microsoft IIS 8 using a SSL certificate that only secures one domain name. If you have more than one server or device, you will need to install the certificate on each server or device you need to secure. If you still have not generated your certificate and completed the validation process, reference our CSR Generation Instructions<\/a> and disregard the steps below.<\/p>\n

What You’ll Need<\/h2>\n

1. Your server certificate<\/h3>\n

This is the certificate you received from the CA for your domain. You may have been sent this via email. If not, you can download it by visiting your Account Dashboard and clicking on your order.<\/p>\n

2. Your intermediate certificates<\/h3>\n

These files allow the devices connecting to your server to identify the issuing CA. There may be more than one of these certificates. If you got your certificate in a ZIP folder, it should also contain the Intermediate certificate(s), which is sometimes referred to as a CA Bundle. If not, download the appropriate CA Bundle for your certificate.<\/a><\/p>\n

3. Your private key<\/h3>\n

This file should be on your server, or in your possession if you generated your CSR from a free generator tool. On certain platforms, such as Microsoft IIS, the private key is not immediately visible to you but the server is keeping track of it.<\/p>\n

Installation Instructions (single name certificate)<\/h2>\n

1. Launch IIS Manager<\/h3>\n

Click Start, Control Panel, System and Security, Administrative Tools, <\/strong>and then select Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.<\/strong><\/p>\n

2. Select your server name<\/h3>\n

In the left Connections<\/strong> menu, select the server name<\/strong> (host) where you want to install the SSL certificate.\"MS<\/p>\n

3. Click Server Certificates<\/h3>\n

In the center menu, click the Server Certificates <\/strong>icon under the Security <\/strong>section near the bottom.\"MS<\/p>\n

4. Click Complete Certificate Request…<\/h3>\n

In the right Actions <\/strong>menu, click Complete Certificate Request\u2026<\/strong>\"MS<\/p>\n

5. Browse to your server certificate<\/h3>\n

In the Complete Certificate <\/strong>Request wizard, click “\u2026<\/strong>” to browse and select Your Server Certificate<\/strong> file that was previously saved on your server’s desktop.<\/p>\n

6. Name your certificate<\/h3>\n

Enter a Friendly Name,<\/strong> which is an internal reference name to distinguish the file later. We recommend including the CAs name and expiration date.<\/p>\n

7. Select Personal<\/h3>\n

Select Personal<\/strong> as your certificate store for the new certificate.\"MS<\/p>\n

8. Click OK<\/h3>\n

Click OK<\/strong> and the newly installed certificate should appear in the refreshed Server Certificate List.<\/p>\n

Binding Your Certificate to Your Website<\/h2>\n

Now, proceed with the remaining steps which will help you assign or bind the SSL certificate to the appropriate website.<\/p>\n

1. Access your Sites folder<\/h3>\n

From the left Connections <\/strong>menu, expand your server’s name, expand the Sites <\/strong>folder, and then select the site (e.g. Default Web Site) that you want to secure.<\/p>\n

2. Click Bindings…<\/h3>\n

In the right Actions <\/strong>menu, click Bindings\u2026<\/strong>\"MS<\/p>\n

3. Click Add<\/h3>\n

In Site Bindings\u2026<\/strong>, if you are installing a new certificate and need to create a new binding, click Add. <\/strong>If you are renewing an expiring certificate, click the existing binding and click Edit<\/strong>. \"MSNote:<\/em><\/strong> If you already have the appropriate site binding created, click “Edit” and change the SSL certificate accordingly. <\/em><\/p>\n

4. Input the following<\/h3>\n

In Add Site Binding, <\/strong>enter the following information:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Type <\/strong>\u2013 Select “https.”<\/li>\n
  2. IP Address<\/strong> \u2013 Select “All unassigned.” Now, if you have multiple IP address, select the correct one that applies.<\/li>\n
  3. Port <\/strong>\u2013 Enter “443” unless you are listening to SSL traffic on another port (e.g. 992).<\/li>\n
  4. SSL Certificates <\/strong>\u2013 Select the “friendly name” of the SSL certificate you just installed.\u00a0 You can always click “View” to confirm the certificates validity details.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    5. Click Ok<\/h3>\n

    Click Ok<\/strong> to finish binding the SSL certificate to your live website.<\/p>\n

    Congratulations! You’ve successfully installed your SSL certificate! To check your work, visit the website in your browser at https:\/\/yourdomain.tld<\/u><\/em> and view the certificate\/site information to see if HTTPS\/SSL is working properly. Remember, you may need to restart your server for changes to take effect.<\/p>\n

    SSL Installation Instructions (multiple certificates using SNI)<\/h2>\n

    The following instructions will guide you through the SSL installation process on Microsoft IIS 8 with multiple SSL certificate securing one or more domain names using Server Name Indication (SNI). If you have more than one server or device, you will need to install the certificate on each server or device you need to secure. If you still have not generated your certificate and completed the validation process, reference our CSR Generation Instructions<\/a> and disregard the steps below.<\/p>\n

    1. Launch IIS Manager<\/h3>\n

    Click Start, Control Panel, System and Security, Administrative Tools, <\/strong>and then select Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Note:<\/em><\/strong> If you receive an error during this step, please reference the “Known Error Message in IIS 8<\/a>” section below. <\/em><\/p>\n

    Binding Your Certificates to Your Website (multiple certificates using SNI)<\/h2>\n

      5. Click OK<\/h3>\n

      Click OK<\/strong> to finish binding the first <\/strong>SSL certificate to your live website.<\/p>\n

      Note 1:<\/strong><\/em> If you do not already have a\u00a0CSR and an active SSL Certificate for your additional websites, please read our instructions on creating a\u00a0Certificate Signing Request in Microsoft IIS 8<\/a><\/strong> for the additional websites before proceeding.<\/em><\/p>\n

      Note 2:<\/strong> Install the additional SSL certificates referencing the above instructions for installation and binding up to this point.<\/em><\/p>\n

      6. Input the following for the additional certificates<\/h3>\n

      In Add Site Bindings<\/strong>, enter the following information:<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Type <\/strong>\u2013 Select “https.”<\/li>\n
      2. IP Address<\/strong> \u2013 Select “All unassigned.” Now, if you have multiple IP addresses, select the correct one that applies.<\/li>\n
      3. Port <\/strong>\u2013 Enter “443” unless you are listening to SSL traffic on another port (e.g. 992).<\/li>\n
      4. Host Name <\/strong>\u2013 Enter the “host name” or “domain name” that you are securing and check the box for Require Server Name Indication<\/strong>. This box will be required for all additional sites that you secure on this server (other than the primary host name).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        \"MS<\/p>\n

        7. Click OK<\/h3>\n

        Click OK<\/strong> to finish binding the additional SSL certificates to your live websites.<\/p>\n

        Note:<\/strong> Repeat the previous step to secure any additional host names using SNI.<\/em><\/p>\n

        Congratulations! You’ve successfully installed your SSL certificate! To check your work, visit the website in your browser at https:\/\/yourdomain.tld<\/u><\/em> and view the certificate\/site information to see if HTTPS\/SSL is working properly. Remember, you may need to restart your server for changes to take effect.<\/p>\n

        Known Error Messages in IIS 8<\/h2>\n

        Microsoft IIS 8 is known to generate error message: “Failed to remove the certificate.”<\/p>\n

        If you are certain this is the same server where you generated the CSR, then the error may be meaningless and the certificate may have correctly installed. To test this, close the dialog and click “F5” to refresh the list of server certificates. The new certificate should now be in the list, and you can continue with your next step.<\/p>\n

        However, if the newly installed certificate does not appear in the server certificate list, we recommend you re-issue the certificate with a new CSR and attempt the installation process again. Here are some instructions to guide you through the reissue\u00a0process:<\/p>\n

        1. Generate a new CSR<\/h3>\n

        Generate a new Certificate Signing Request (CSR) in Microsoft IIS 8.<\/a><\/p>\n

        2. Log in<\/h3>\n

        Log in to your Account Control Panel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        3. Select your Active Certificate<\/h3>\n

        Select your Active Certificate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        4. Click Re-Issue Certificate<\/h3>\n

        Click the Re-Issue Certificate<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n

        5. Paste your new CSR<\/h3>\n

        Paste in your new CSR.<\/p>\n

        6. Complete domain validation<\/h3>\n

        Submit and complete domain validation again (if required).<\/p>\n

        7. Save the new certificate<\/h3>\n

        Save the newly issued SSL certificate on your server’s desktop.<\/p>\n

        8. Repeat the installation instructions<\/h3>\n
