The first requirement for all Individual Validated Code Signing Certificates is Identity Authentication. Here the CA will attempt to verify the identity of the individual applying for the certificate.
At this time, only Sectigo will issue Code Signing certificates to individuals.
How to Complete Identity Authentication
To satisfy the Identity Authentication requirement, the CA will need to make sure that you are who you say you are. That means verifying the personal identity of the applicant. There are two paths you can take to complete validation as an Individual.
Option 1 – Photo ID with Selfie
The applicant’s identity can be proven with a government-issued photo ID. You will need to submit the following documents for validation:
- Government-issued photo ID including the same name and address on your order
- A photo of you (a “selfie”) holding the ID card, clearly showing your face, with the ID card readable
You can send these two documents to the validation team by either opening a case in the Sectigo support portal, linked below, or by responding to an email request from the validation team.

If your government-issued photo ID does not include an address, or the address does not match your order, you’ll need to follow the second procedure detailed below.
Option 2 – Face to Face Verification
The applicant’s identity can be proven by completing a “Face to Face” verification form. This form must be notarized by a licensed Notary Public or attorney, or your country’s equivalent of a Notary Public. Please be certain your notary is authorized to conduct business in your area, as the CA may reject your forms if the notary cannot be verified.
To complete Face to Face verification, submit the following documents:
- Notarized copy of your government-issued photo ID, e.g. driver’s license, passport, national ID, or military ID
- Notarized Face to Face Personal Declaration Statement
- Notarized Face to Face Confirming Person Statement

After you submit your Face to Face documents, the validation team will verify the Notary’s credentials with the respective registration agency.
In some cases, you may also be required to complete a phone call with the validation team on a verified telephone number.
