SSL Automation

Compare SSL Automation Tools to Find the Best Option for Your Needs and Environment

With the CA/B Forum’s decision to shorten certificates to only 47 days (1.5 months), manually renewing and reinstalling SSL certificates is no longer practical. That’s eight plus renewals and installations per year. Imagine if you have hundreds of them (or more) to manage. The only viable solution to not working more or harder is automation. Configure it once, and your certificates issue, validate, install, and renew themselves without any calendar reminders or spreadsheets.

Where Shorter Certificate Lifespans Create the Biggest Challenges

Shorter certificates sound simple on paper: just renew them more often, right? In reality, this change creates
more operational challenges that affect every team. Here’s what you’re actually dealing with.

  • Icon More Operational Workload More Operational Workload

With 47-day validity, organizations must perform eight or more certificate renewals annually instead of one.

  • Icon Risk of Downtime Risk of Downtime is Significantly Higher

For every certificate, you track eight expirations instead of one—that's way more room for error!

  • Icon Automation Automation Becomes Non-Negotiable

Manual renewal processes such as spreadsheets and calendar reminders won’t scale.

Breaking Down the 47-day Certificate Lifetime Reductions

Certificates are going to need more frequent renewals. It doesn’t matter if it’s DV, OV, or EV—the shorter lifespans apply to all of them. These changes will roll out in phases. Certificate validity periods are shrinking in three distinct phases. Each one cuts the renewal window and increases the urgency for automation.

  • Certs are valid up to 6 months Starting March 15, 2026, certificates will be valid up to 200 days, while reuse windows for organizational and domain validation data shrink.
  • Certs are valid up to 3 months Starting March 15, 2027: certificates will only be valid for 100 days. Now there are four renewals per certificate annually.
  • Certs are valid up to 1.5 months Starting March 15, 2029: certificates shrink to just 47 days. At this point, eight plus renewals are needed per certificate per year.
  • Beyond 2029 Let’s be direct: no IT team wants to chase renewals; automation is the only way to manage certificates in the 47-day era.
