CSR Creation Guideline for Microsoft Exchange 2013

Step By Step Information about Microsoft Exchange 2013 CSR Creation

As we all know, a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) is an exclusively formatted encrypted message sent to a Certificate Authority (CA) by an applicant to validate the information required for certificate issuance. Here, we have put together a stepwise procedure to generate a CSR for Exchange 2013 server.

If you already have an SSL certificate with you, all you need to do is follow an SSL Installation Guide for Exchange 2013.

Easy accessibility of an interface through the browser is one of the several changes that were made to Exchange 2013. Here is an easy-to-use CSR generation guide created by The SSL Store™ for all its users:

Step 1 – Open your web browser and browse 'https://localhost/ecp and access the 'Exchange Admin Center'

Step 2 – Login by entering your domain/user name and password.

Step 3 – Now select the 'Servers' from the left column and click on 'Certificates' on the right side of the screen. After that, click on the '+' symbol as highlighted in the Image below.

Step 4 – Next, 'New Exchange Certificate' wizard will appear in the pop-up window.

Step 5 – In that window, select the option of 'Create a request for a certificate from a certification authority' and click on 'Next'.

Step 6 – You'll want to enter a friendly name for this certificate in the space provided below 'Friendly name for this certificate'. Please note that this name is for your personal use only.

Step 7 – Click on the check box appearing in the window as shown below, if you want to generate the CSR for a wildcard. If not, ignore and just click on 'Next' to go to the next screen.

Step 8 – Click on 'Browse' to choose the server on which you wish to store the certificate request, click on 'Next.

Step 9 – Users not opting for wildcard certificate can proceed by selecting the services from the list, which they plan to run using 'Ctrl + Click' to highlight the services. However, users opting for a Wildcard certificate need to ignore this step.

In the screen appearing next, review the list of the names suggested by Exchange 2013 for you to include in your certificate request. Analyze the names and add any extra names by clicking on the '+' button.

Step 10 – In the next window, you need to specify the information about your organization, which is required by the Certification Authority (CA). Before filling out the information, following points should be considered:

  • Mention full, legal name of your company as the 'Organization Name'.
  • The 'Department Name' column should specify your department within the organization.
  • Enter the city's information again if you don't have 'State/ Province'.

Click 'Next' after you have submitted all the information thoroughly.

Step 11 – To save the CSR on your computer as a '.req' file, enter a network share path and then click on ‘Finish’ button.

Step 12 – After performing the above steps, you should be able to open the CSR with a notepad or WordPad. You are supposed to copy the entire text of that file during the order enrollment process.

Step 13 – You can now carry out the process of installing the SSL certificate after receiving the certificate file from CA.
