Internet Scams and Your Website

How to be safe online – the basics

There’s nothing wrong with taking an extra step of precaution, especially when your customers submit their information online to purchase your product or service. You want your customers to know that your site is guarded from phishing scams and identity theft. First, you need to know the basics about protecting your customer’s information and identity.

How a customer will know your site is safe

There are many risks people take online when sharing personal information. When your site shows an EV Certificate, your customers will not see typical warning signs of a phishing Web site. An EV Certificate holds the same security power as a SSL Certificate, the big difference is it’s a symbol of trust that your customers can see.

Extended Validation (EV) Certificates

When you think of EV Certificates, think of the Green Address Bar. Once you update your SSL Certificate to an EV Certificate, your customers will deem your Web site more trustworthy. When they go to your site, the URL address bar will turn the color green, indicating its encryption. Plus, an EV Certificate signifies that your Web site went through a validation process before it was issued a certificate – now that’s purely a precautionary step. What’s in it for you? More trust, more customers, more money.

Can you spot a fake web site?

Phishing scams are advancing which is why EV Certificates are essential to gaining customer trust. Can you tell the difference between a real Web site and its phishing counterpart? Answer these True or False questions:

  • A phishing site has HTTPS, not HTTP, in front of the URL. T or F?
  • A phishing site kindly asks customers to submit personal information? T or F?
  • A phishing site always looks different than the real Web site. T or F?

If you are not sure of the answers, here is a list of what customers look for when identifying a secure site:
* The URL begins with HTTPS, not HTTP. The “s” in HTTPS means “secure”. Number one is False.
* A secure site kindly asks customers to submit personal information. Phishing sites scare them. Number two is False.

Customers also look for the following to distinguish a real site from a fake:

* Some type of certificate.
* A well-built Web site with great programming
* The company name in the URL immediately precedes “.com”. Phishing sites will have extra letters or numbers before the “.com”.
* There are few to no typographical errors. A lot of typographical errors are typical of phishing sites.

However, some phishing sites mimic a real site almost perfectly. Number 3 is False. Your customers should not have to scan your Web site to decide if it’s safe or not. The best way to rid this worry is to add the Green Bar – it instantly establishes trust with a customer. Once a customer clicks on your site, he/she sees the Green Bar, and the worry is gone.
